Plot: A 1995 murder case is revisited 17 years later, as the solving of the crime is called into question. The inquiry unfolds in the present day through separate interrogations of former Louisiana State Police Detectives Rustin Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson). The former partners narrate the story as it weaves between 1995 and 2012, and they delve into their tumultuous partnership and personal lives.
Before watching True Detective, I was expecting a well made, and well written crime show. However, it didn't take long to realise that the story is much more complex than a crime show. The story itself was fantastic and had everything; it was thrilling, suspenseful, disturbing and was expertly directed.
The level of acting throughout the entire show, from leads to extras, was absolutely phenomenal. McConaughey and Harrelson were cast perfectly, and their performances were incredible. Their characters, and character development, was some of the best I've seen in a television show and the swampland of Louisiana was the perfect location for this unsettling drama.
True Detective is a show where the upmost concentration is needed in order to make sense of the story. As you watch it, you soon realise that every tiny detail has an effect on the case, and as a result you are constantly trying solve it. Which is something I love. However, you soon find out that it is just about impossible to do so.
One of my favourite aspects of the show was its ability to draw you in and tell such a fantastic story in just eight episodes. I was hooked immediately, and after the second episode it struck me just how great this show was.
Too many times people, myself included, have put off watching a show because you have to concentrate for the entire duration. For those people who can't be bothered to watch a show where you actually have to concentrate, I am telling you to make the effort to watch this one. True Detective is a television show that will change your perspective of what a good show, and is the best thing I have ever seen from a television show or movie. Shows such as True Detective are the future of the entertainment industry.
